A new study shows that just 10% of adolescent gamers account for over 60% of in-game purchases. These heavy spenders are significantly more likely to exhibit symptoms of gaming and gambling disorders, regardless of their family's wealth.

Disclosure: I am the lead author of the stuy discussed in the article.

The article provides an accurate and balanced account of our study. Central findings are reported, as are limitations of the study.

Minor points: the statement that family financial circumstances had “no bearing” on heavy spending is stronger than the statistical finding that socioeconomic status was not significantly associated with heavyspender status; describing heavy spenders as showing greater “psychological distress” is broader than the constructs measured in the study (gaming and gambling disorder).

I am very thankful for the way our study is portrayed here.
