How the scoring works and what it all means

1. Evidence

To what extent does the science support the conclusions described in the article? Scores range from 1 (no valid supporting scientific evidence) to 10 (all scientific claims supported in full).

2. Balance

Does the article provide an unbiased view of the scientific content and interpretation? Scores range from 1 (severely biased scientific content) to 10 (balanced scientific content).

3. Clarity

Does the explanation of the science facilitate sufficient understanding and avoid confusion? Scores range from 1 (very poor scientific clarity) to 10 (excellent scientific clarity).

4. Total Score

The total score is the average across all of the article's reviews.

5. Score Variation

The flanking dotted lines represent the variation (standard deviation) in scoring across all article reviews. Shown if an article has been reviewed by multiple scientists.
