I'm basing this review on the Guardian article but have not appraised the original research article. In the Guardian article, there is no mention of other factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, etc, which could influence the interpretation of the study results. The strength of the protective effect of staying mentally active on based on this study may be over estimated. However this study does add to the evidence that staying mentally active throughout life is beneficial.
