Pia Leete is an RD Lawrence and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. Her main academic interests are focused on understanding the pancreas in Type 1 diabetes. She was the first to describe stratifiable differences in the pancreatic immunopathology of Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in humans (CD20Hi vs CD20Lo) during her PhD, and her work continues to explore how the concept that clinically relevant, aetiologically different forms (or Endotypes) of T1D in the pancreas can inform clinical trial design and paths toward precision medicine.

With an unusual trajectory into science (including living off the grid for a few years, counselling training, stilt walking and award-winning wood-craft in her past), and as a single parent of two neurodiverse children, Pia deeply believes in the importance of open-minded unbiassed curiosity, coupled with inclusive behaviours and divergent thinking to solve real world problems. But step one is real, honest information!

Abortion drug could help reduce risk of breast cancer, group of medics says

This is an interesting article - not just about breast cancer treatment - but raises the questions about repurposement of drugs. One presumes that the evidence described within the article is solid because it was published in Lancet - but no description of the data (evidence) is described.

It also scores badly for balance - because it is unclear if the pharma companies that are reported to be resistant to studying the drug have been contacted for comment - or why they may not want to make money from a drug already on the market - if it is going to be such a game changer.

Clarity also scores relatively poorly because the Lancet authors own words are cited but often slightly clumsily making this tabloid read a bit trickier than one might expect of a broadsheet.

Kudos should be offered however for some cross referencing to broaden readers understanding of global breast cancer risk by linking the op-ed to the WHO_int and NHS websites.

The authors of this article dont appear to have over or understated the findings in the study by the researchers in Japan _ however, the reader can actually find who they are from with the piece itself. Moreover, within the news article there are several links which one might expect to direct readers to the research, or other sites with appropriate information - instead each click takes you to the Fox News Headline page that is filled with sensationalist seeming headlines.
